I should’ve stepped up sooner.
We’ve watched zoning, building inspections, and other rules go from bad to worse. Like many of you, I sat on my hands, and now we’re in a big mess.
I’m no politician. I install septic tanks for a living, dig ditches, and speak plain. No fancy speeches or writing here. But I’m your neighbor, a fellow American, and I’m tired of government creeping deeper into our lives, especially telling us what we can and can’t do on our own property. The less government in our business, the better. These rules have been around a while, but remember: any rule man makes, man can undo.
Commissioners aren’t elites deciding what’s best for us. They’re supposed to serve, not control. If they won’t listen, they gotta go. I hear stories every day that baffle me. A lady couldn’t split her four acres to sell half. A guy got state EPD approval for chicken houses but the county forced expensive, unnecessary sediment work. You can’t build a house if it’s “too small,” or move an older trailer because it “looks bad.”
These aren’t rare—they’re everyday now. Oglethorpe did fine before this zoning mess. If you like bloated bureaucracy, head over to Athens and you’ll see where unchecked overreach leads. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not calling for zero rules or wild west chaos. We can have simple, common-sense rules that don’t oppress folks. But currently, it sure seems like our Commission is more interested in control than service. Privatize inspections? Fine, but why not privatize the whole county if it’s always “cheaper”?
I don’t have all the answers. Anyone claiming to is lying to you. But together we can fix this.
Reagan said it best: “We are a nation that has a government, not the other way around.” Same for Oglethorpe—we don’t have to put up with it. If you’re fed up, stand up now. Talk to neighbors, attend meetings, tell commissioners what you want. Let’s make Oglethorpe great again. This land is your land and it’ll stay that way IF we show up to the ballot box.
I’d appreciate your vote for District 1 County Commissioner. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out!
Sincerely,
Britt Brooks
